Roadblock #4: Disunity

The fourth roadblock to fellowship and friendship is what Oxford’s calls disunity. This is defined as having “disagreement and conflict within a group.”3

Obviously, disunity is the opposite of unity. We see it played out every day in almost every avenue of life. During a game, we see players arguing with one another or even coaches and players getting into it about a play gone wrong. It happens in the business world. An employee works as hard as they can but is never able to please the boss. Disunity in our faith community should be unacceptable to us. It’s a roadblock that prevents the church from winning in its mission. It’s also a black eye on the face of the church for all the community to see, and it halts the progress of the church.

Unfortunately, disunity is a widespread problem. People who are supposed to be working together, playing on the same team, aren’t unified about how to get the job done. Granted, there are many reasons disunity occurs. Sometimes it’s due to a lack of quality leadership or is caused by a person who has lost focus on the task to be accomplished. Disunity keeps groups and organizations from achieving their potential.
